The Darsena, that area over there, is all concrete now, but back then... it was all fenced off and there were roses everywhere because it was a big garden. It looked out onto the Candiano Canal โ can you see the roses there? And so... There were loads of them, it was lovely; this part here looks out onto the Candiano Canal. Now... it's all tarmac, but back then it was all... well, because my parents... I used to go there โ my grandad would come and pick me up โ because I went to the Sisters of Charity; I was there full-time because my parents had to work, and I went to the Sisters' school โ it was a private school back then...
Prima...
Before... Well, I used to work here when I was young, here in this factory, it was a grain warehouse. It all went to the dogs; they closed it down because he didn't give a damn, and I ended up working as a bricklayer, and then eventually at CMC. CMC went to the dogs... mind you, I was the last one to hand over the keys when they cleared everything out of here; I said, 'Goodbye, it's been a pleasure', I said, 'I'm not coming back to work', I told the boss. And I never went back...
Vedi?
See? They're clean inside. Usually, the mullet here already eat those seaweeds... so, well, some people turn their noses up at them. But these ones are really clean; they're fresh, straight from the sea. See that greenish tinge they've got? These ones come straight from... I've got a knife that doesn't cut very well, but...
It was the little seaside hospital, though they used to call it sbdalet. It was right there โ when you're on Via Trieste, you can see there's a... it's near the bascule bridge. Because there were all sorts of medicines inside, and there was also a huge trapdoor โ that was basically the washhouse, where they washed all the clothes. As far as I'm concerned, that's where they kept people in quarantine; they used to quarantine people there because there were medicines, and there were even little beds for women for gynaecological examinations... and there was even a telephone, can you believe it...

Then there's... well, there used to be this house which was sort of a cooperative too; there was a woman called Riccarda. Then after her there was a certain Ugolina โ they called her la fasulna โ whose son had died, and she kept throwing herself into the Candiano. But the Candiano... there were rocks, they weren't... then after this farmer's wife โ who, by the way, had a daughter who was a hairdresser and all that sort of thing โ there was us with this little hospital, which was a seaside hospital...
